What KPV is
KPV is a three-amino-acid peptide: lysine, proline and valine. The same three residues sit at the very end (positions 11-13) of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH), a natural hormone in the melanocortin family, and KPV has been studied in the lab as a stripped-down piece of that hormone. It is one of the smallest peptides people sell. That makes it simple to make, but also easy to mix up with acetylated, amidated or rearranged versions that look almost the same.
The published research on KPV is preclinical. It covers cell culture and mouse models of colitis, plus a growing number of drug-delivery studies, and we found no controlled human trials in PubMed. KPV is not an FDA-approved drug. In July 2026, an FDA advisory committee voted to recommend that KPV be considered for the list of substances pharmacies may compound. That recommendation is not binding, and the substance has not been added to the list. Because products sold as KPV can differ in what molecule is actually in the vial, in salt form and in how much peptide each vial holds, testing each lot is the only way to know what a vial contains.

Modifications and look-alikes
Modifications
None in the reference form: free N-terminal amine, free C-terminal acid, all L-amino acids. Commercial material is often supplied as a salt (acetate or TFA); the counter-ion does not change the peptide's mass, but it does count toward vial weight and so affects content.
What it gets confused with
Several different molecules are sold under the KPV name, and each needs its own expected mass. Ac-KPV (N-acetylated): C18H32N4O5, about 384.48 Da (mono 384.2373), +42 Da vs KPV. KPV-NH2 (C-terminal amide): C16H31N5O3, about 341.46 Da (mono 341.2427). This is only about 1 Da below free KPV, so a low-resolution check can miss the difference. Ac-KPV-NH2: C18H33N5O4, about 383.49 Da (mono 383.2533). D-amino-acid forms (for example D-Pro) have exactly the same mass as KPV and cannot be told apart by MS alone; they need a chiral method or a reference standard. Rearranged tripeptides with the same three residues (for example Lys-Val-Pro, ChEBI:160440, also C16H30N4O4, 342.44 Da) have identical mass, so the sequence needs MS/MS fragments or retention time against a standard. Gln-Pro-Val (QPV, mono 342.1903) differs from KPV by only 0.036 Da and needs high-resolution MS to separate. The related research analogue KdPT is a different tripeptide and should not be reported as KPV. Salt forms: acetate or TFA counter-ions add weight but not peptide mass; a vial labelled by gross weight can hold noticeably less peptide. The masses for the variants and QPV were calculated from their formulas and not taken from a database (see open flags).

Regulatory status. Not an FDA-approved drug. FDA removed KPV from its 503A Category 2 list (bulk substances raising significant safety concerns) in April 2026 after the nomination was withdrawn. FDA said this removal does not make KPV eligible for compounding. On July 23, 2026, FDA's Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee voted to recommend KPV for consideration for the 503A Bulks List. The vote is non-binding, and as of October 2026 KPV has not been added to the list.
