SYSTEMATIC REVIEW2025
Emerging use of BPC-157 in orthopaedic sports medicine
Vasireddi N, Hahamyan H, Salata MJ, et al. HSS Journal. 2025;21(4):485–495.
What they did. Researchers screened 544 articles published from 1993 to 2024 and included 36 that reported on how BPC-157 works, its effects on muscle, tendon, ligament and bone, its metabolism, and its safety.
What they found. 35 of the 36 studies were preclinical. Across those models, BPC-157 was associated with better healing of muscle, tendon, ligament and bone injuries. The only clinical study was a small retrospective series of 12 patients with knee pain. The authors found no clinical safety data and noted a plasma half-life of under 30 minutes.
Why it matters for testing. The authors name unregulated manufacturing and contamination as possible sources of adverse effects. That is a product-quality problem, and it is exactly what lot testing answers.
NARRATIVE REVIEW2026
BPC-157 as an investigational peptide therapeutic: formulation and development barriers
Mateescu DM, Gavrilescu DM, Constantinescu FE, et al. Pharmaceutics. 2026;18(5):625.
What they did. The authors reviewed the literature through April 2026, along with patent databases and FDA, EMA and WADA sources, to assess BPC-157 as a pharmaceutical product rather than as a biological curiosity.
What they found. More than three decades of preclinical work show consistent biological activity, but no pharmaceutical-grade formulation has been developed or validated. Human data come from fewer than 30 people across three uncontrolled pilot studies, and none of those studies used a standardized pharmaceutical preparation.
Why it matters for testing. With no standard product, there is no standard for what a vial should contain. Identity, purity and content have to be checked lot by lot.
ANIMAL STUDY2026
Effects of BPC-157 and TB-500 on Achilles tendon healing in rats
Biçer O, Adanır O, Güleryüz Y, et al. Joint Diseases and Related Surgery. 2026;37(3):822–837.
What they did. Rats with a surgically repaired Achilles tendon were split into four groups: no treatment, BPC-157, TB-500, or both. After four weeks the tendons were tested for strength and examined under the microscope.
What they found. Both peptides were associated with better tendon structure than no treatment, but only TB-500 reached statistical significance on tendon strength. For BPC-157 alone, the improvements in the overall tissue scores did not reach significance. Giving both together added no benefit over either one alone.
Why it matters for testing. Studies like this use characterized material. A vial that is mislabeled, under-filled or degraded is not the compound the research describes.
